Saints lost their play-off eliminator – which seemed inevitable as Ian Milward’s side had slumped to a run of eight defeats from their last 11 games.
Ade Gardner scored Saints’ only try in what was the 382nd and last appearance for legendary captain Chris Joynt.

Three tries from prolific wingman Alan Hunte plus scores from Steve Prescott and Paul Loughlin secured two league points.

Saints reached the Lancashire Cup Final thanks to tries from Roy Haggerty, Tony Burke and Peter Gorley. Sean Day kicked four goals, with Barry Ledger chipping over two drop goals from stand off.

Another early cup knockout for Saints – this time in the John Player Trophy at Station Road.
Eric Ashton’s side could not convert their weekly league for into the knockout comps – and that would continue all year. Saints’ points came from three Kel Coslett goals.

Tries from Tony Barrow, playing on the wing, and stand off Peter Harvey helped Saints edge Wire in the Lancashire Cup semi-final. Len Killeen kicked a goal – with two points the only difference between the sides.
A crowd of 19,258 packed into the old Wilderspool ground to witness a tough, tense affair.
