SAINTS will publish their 21-man squad for Saturday's play-off game against Warrington Wolves tomorrow at noon.
All eyes will be on whether former NRL packman Curtis Sironen has recovered from a pulled calf to be included in the reckoning.
The giant second rower has been a big miss since suffering the injury in the Magic game against Wigan in mid August - and it would present a big boost for the Saints who go into the play-offs as underdogs.
During an injury-decimated season, Sironen has stood tall and helped carry a depleted pack in tough circumstances.
Wellens said: “Curtis is making good improvements and running with physios.
“A lot will be determined by how he responds to that running session.
"Curtis has been huge, particularly during those challenging periods of the season, a bit like Matty Lees when a lot of players were out.
"He was very much stepping up for the team and carrying the can in tough circumstances."
Understandably, if he does play he will be lacking in match fitness and there are other aspects Saints have to factor in given that it is now knockout football.
But there is a limit to the amount of risk they are prepared to take.
"Curtis is an important player for us so if he was to play on the weekend, it would always come with the element of risk attached to it," Wellens said.
"But we have to obviously be smart as well in terms of how much risk we are prepared to take because we want to go to Warrington and win, so we give ourselves another game next week.
"So we'll be sensible and how we approach that situation.
"Curtis provides a great impact when he plays and he's a big body, tough to handle and is also a very skilful player as well.
"He gives us something different and obviously it would be great to have him back but again it's important we make sensible decisions."
Wellens earlier this week revealed that Moses Mbye would be missing for three weeks after he picked up an injury in warm up.
But the good news is Alex Walmsley returns after a bout of sickness - and his size was sorely missed in the defeat by Leigh in which the pack was bullied by the fired up Leopards.
