Fresh from winning the League Leaders Shield, patched-up Saints bounced past Castleford to reach the play-off semis with tries from Tommy Makinson, Adam Swift, Kyle Amor, James Roby, 2, Jordan Turner and Mose Masoe.

Saints’ hammering in front of 13,127 at Odsal was part of a dismal end of season run of eight defeats from the last 11. The period also saw Ian Millward’s side suffer a 70-0 defeat by Leeds.

Wing wonders Alan Hunte, 4, and Anthony Sullivan, 3, led the way. Blockbusting Welsh centre Scott Gibbs scored his first senior try for the club after his switch from Swansea.

Tries from Les Jones, Jeff Heaton and George Nicholls, with three goals each from John Walsh and Kel Coslett, saw off the Loiners at Knowsley Road.

Centre Kevin Kelly scored a try in his only Saints appearance, with Tony Barrow crossing the whitewash twice. Len Killeen kicked four goals in the game at the Athletic Grounds.

Winger Eric Ledger waltzed in for four tries for the second week running in a win at Belle Vue. Saints’ other tries came from former Pontypool centre Don Gullick, Gordon Ratcliffe, ex-Pilkington Recs centre Bill Finnan and Welsh loose forward Ray Cale. George Parsons kicked four goals.
