10 Years Ago. 12 Sept 2014.

Huddersfield 17 St Helens 16.

Saints missed a chance to clinch the League Leaders Shield after losing to a Leroy Cudjoe drop goal 10 minutes from time.

They had led 10-0 before having Alex Walmsley sent off for a late tackle on Luke Robinson.

Tries came from Tommy Makinson, Lance Hohaia and James Roby. Saints did finish top after Castleford failed to get the win needed in Catalans the following day.

30 Years Ago. 11 Sept 1994.

Workington Town 25 St Helens 30.

Samoan rugby union recruit Apollo Perelini made the first of 193 appearances in this win at Derwent Park.

Saints tries came from Paul Loughlin, Bobbie Goulding, Adam Fogerty, Sonny Nickle and Ian Pickavance, 2.

40 Years Ago. 14 Sept 1984.

St Helens 58 Runcorn Highfield 14.

Paul Round scored a hat-trick as Saints kicked off their Lancashire Cup campaign.

Other tries came from John Butler, Barry Ledger, Shaun Allen, 2, Peter Gorley, Chris Arkwright and Derrick Seabrook. Sean Day kicked nine goals.

60 Years Ago. 12 Sept 1964.

St Helens 37 Blackpool 5.

Keith Northey – father of future Saint Andy - grabbed a hat-trick as Saints eased past Borough. Other tries came from Cen Williams, Billy Benyon, Alex Murphy, 2, Peter Harvey and John Tembey.

70 Years Ago. 11 Sept 1954.

St Helens 27 Whitehaven 6.

Eric Ledger – dad of Saints 80s flyer Barry – raced in for four tries in the Lancashire Cup win over the Cumbrians at Knowsley Road.

Todder Dickinson grabbed the other one with Welsh packman George Parsons hoofing over six goals for Jim Sullivan’s side.
