St Helens Town defeated Haydock FC 6-2 in pre season friendly at Ruskin Drive.
A crowd of 220 would witness the ‘Coal Firm’ derby, with most huddled in the main stand to avoid to the constant threat of showers.
Kick off was delayed so that both teams could be presented to a visiting party of dignitaries from our twin town Stuttgart.
The German guests barely had time to take their seats in the stand before 3 goals had been scored in the first 3 minutes.
Liam Diggle had fired Town in front from a narrow angle before Haydock replied with a penalty from ex-Town legend Iain Dyson.
Almost immediately from the ensuing kick off, Tom Jackson cut in from the left wing to rifle home a 25 years shot into the top corner that brought the crows to it's feet.
Town continued to dominate the first half with further goals from King Diggle, again with a sweet left foot volley inside the box.
It was however veteran defender Kenny Dixon who received the loudest cheer of the day, thanks to a well timed finish on the half volley.
Haydock rallied well in the second half with a Nathan Ashcroft score sandwiched between two Town goals for youngster Pacey Garrett, who has impressed since being promoted from the under 18s squad.
Town return to action on Saturday at Ruskin with a 12.15pm KO v Winstanley St.Aidans.
