TEE Ritson was given one minute's notice that he was going to be making his home debut - but the Barrow Arrow came up with a solid performance in attack and defence during Saints' win over Hull FC.

The flying wing, who is on a year-long loan from the Cumbrian side, was a late call-up after Mark Percival pulled up in training.

But with a quick re-shuffle, Tommy Makinson switched to centre with Ritson operating on the flank where he was solid and alert on both sides of the ball.

Coach Paul Wellens said: "Tee found out that he was playing one minute before the game.

"It was the back end of the warm up that Mark Percival felt tight.

"We had a bit of a problem there - and I suppose it speaks volumes for Tee’s professionalism with the way he prepares to play a game, even when he is not playing.

"Then flick the switch and go out there and perform and deliver at the standards that we expect here. He was outstanding."

On the other flank Bennison scored two top-drawer tries; one in which he beat four Hull men in cutting back inside to the line to other a low dive in a tight corner for the match winner.

It left Wellens praising both of his wingmen - which shows a degree of depth in the squad given neither were first choice in the recent World Club Challenge win.

"They were both fantastic and I suppose it is another of those selection headaches that you like as a coach," Wellens said.

St Helens Star:

"Jon Bennison scored the game-clinching try at the end but his all round game was fantastic.

"He was sound defensively and under a high ball and his effort areas are second to none in this team.

"For him to score that try at the end - there was probably no more deserving player."
