BILLINGE progressed to the second round of the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup, on Saturday after a fine 2-1 victory away at FC Garston.

Goals in each half from Lewis Dixon and Richie Allen - in a game that to-and-froed for the entire 90 minutes - saw The Storks into the hat.

It was a victory the young Billinge side thoroughly deserved as they played some excellent football with strikers Dylan Woodroffe and Kian Green causing problems every time they went forward.

Sadly their finishing at times didn't match their approach work - and along with a fine goalkeeping display from the Garston custodian -meaning the scoreline was closer than it could and maybe should have been.

That said the team were under pressure at times but defended superbly; especially as they finished the game with outfield player Olly Filson donning the gloves for the last 15 minutes after goalkeeper Will White was carried off with a leg injury.

The home side may have sensed a victory but Filson pulled off two great saves, while at the other end Woodroffe was denied twice before setting up Green whose close effort was pushed onto the bar by the keeper.

After the game Billinge manager Dave Morris was full of praise for all his charges saying: "Nobody had a bad game and it was a real team effort.

"We were down on numbers with three of the back four playing out of position but they were superb against an excellent and experienced outfit.

"Cups are always a good distraction and it was lovely to get through to the next round but it's back to League action next weekend and hopefully this is the springboard to push on."

The sponsors man-of-the match went to Cameron Lee - who was playing out of position at centre-half - whilst the travelling supporters gave their award to Adam Caddick who was neat, tidy and assured at left-back.

Next week The Storks are at home to Maine Road Reserves in a 2pm kick-off.

On Sunday, Billinge Under-17s made it a good weekend for The Storks going second in the League as they beat Earlestown Under-17s 1-0 thanks to a Olly Sammon goal.
