LIVERPOOL St Helens defeated ADM Premier side Eccles 18-5 on their first ever visit to the Fieldway Stadium, Moss Lane before, in squally conditions, both sides produced a full on encounter to warm another sizeable crowd.

A game which wasn’t effectively settled until the 71st minute, saw LSH making most of the running, powered by an outstanding display from number 8, Chris Hull, ably supported in his non-stop endeavours by the reliable Connor Thompson at 7 and a rejuvenated Dave Cunliffe alongside him at number 6, together with some strong running from Alex McClurg.

The lively visitors made the better opening and went ahead in the 7th minute with a well taken try from winger Gavin Ackers-Johnson after a quickly taken free kick. LSH hit back six minutes later after pressuring the Eccles line when Matt Cunliffe breached the defence to score in the left hand corner. Despite the conditions making handling difficult, both sides created chances, but the score remained unchanged as half time was reached.

In the second half LSH took full advantage of the strongish wind, now in their favour, and ensured that most of the game was played in the opposition half. Matty Johnston landed two fine penalties in the 49th and 54th minutes to edge the Moss Laners into the lead before left winger John Romano secured the win with a fine try with nine minutes to go, scooting round to touch down under the posts.
