THE sad passing this week of Widnes-born Saints player Peter Glynn understandably stirred memories of the 1976 Challenge Cup final between Saints and Widnes.

Glynn, then aged 22 was such a late call to the bench that the Wembley match programme had Frank Wilson listed.

A tight game at half time, Glynn came off the bench and scored two tries to seal the Saints win.

It would take another 20 years to win it again, but the main talking point was the fact that Saints' Dad's Army triumphed in the baking heat against the more youthful cup holders Widnes.

Here is a picture of both benches, side by side, at Wembley with young Harry Pinner and Graham Liptrot with arms aloft next to a substituted Billy Benyon - who had been replace.

Coaches Frank Myler and Harry Dawson are on the Widnes bench with Eric Ashton and Bill Boycott directing the Saints.

Widnes would become the Cup Kings, winning at Wembley in 1979, 81 and 84 as well as visiting Wembley in 1977 and 1982.
