DAY 13 of our Great Saints for February – and we look at a one-time club record signing - Stan McCormick.
Saints paid £4,000 to Belle Vue Rangers for McCormick (Heritage number 680) in January 1949.
McCormick was rapid – and had a keen eye for the interception which contributed to him scoring 99 tries in 161 matches between 1949-54.
The photograph here sees McCormick playing against Australia at Knowsley Road, with full-back Jimmy Lowe behind him.
The match, on 27 September 1952, saw Saints win 26-8 after being 21-5 up at the break.
His best season was Saints’ Championship winning year of 1952-53 when he scored 38 tries in the year they won the League Leaders before beating Halifax 24-14 at Man City’s Maine Road.
Alas, Saints suffered a defeat to a Peter Ramsden Huddersfield in the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley.
The following year McCormick joined Warrington and played in the famous 1954 Challenge Cup Final replay at Odsal.
McCormick returned to Saints as coach from 1962-64.
