OUR latest dip into the past via old programmes goes back to 1967 and a tour match between Saints and the mighty Australians.
It was one of a remarkable 27 matches that the Kangaroos played in a tour starting on 30 September in Warrington and finishing with the third test against France in Toulouse on 7 January, 1968.
It was a tour noted for legendary centre Reg Gasnier breaking his leg - twice, with the second fracture forcing the captain/coach to hang up his boots at 28.
Saints had a remarkably good record against the tourists, and triumphed in this one - played on Tuesday, 24 October 1967.
It took place three days after the first test - and as such there were plenty of the first choice Roos missing, but nevertheless it was a strong Green and Gold team.
A 17,250 gate packed into Knowsley Road to witness a tight match that was finely balanced at the break with Roos 4-2 ahead.
Saints' points came from the boot of Tommy Bishop, 2, and Kel Coslett.
The Australia team featured second row Kevin Goldspink - father of future Saints prop Brett Goldspink.
Ron Coote was the loose forward - no relation to Saints full back Lachlan.
The programme features an interesting piece on Tom van Vollenhoven's testomonial....including the anonymous donation of 10 guineas.
As for the tour itself Great Britain won the first test at Leeds, but defeats at White City and a frozen Station Road saw Australia win the Ashes series 2-1.
