CENTRE Matty Costello will leave the club ahead of the 2021 season after nine years at St Helens.

Having progressed through the Club’s Academy ranks from the age of 14, Costello made his first team debut against Huddersfield in 2018 playing seven times in total.

He played 11 times in 2019, scoring four tries, including a hat-trick against Catalans Dragons.

This year he played eight times, scoring twice but he will now take up a new challenge in 2021.

Costello said: “Thank you to everyone involved at the Saints. To all the coaches that I’ve worked with through the Academy and into the first team as well as all the lads I’ve played with.

"It really has been amazing. I have nothing but good memories here and whilst it will be hard leaving many of my best mates and the team I’ve grown up supporting, I’m excited and ready for a new challenge ahead.”

Kristian Woolf said: “Matty progressed through our Academy to go on and become a first grade player. He leaves us on the back of two Super League Grand Final winners rings and I want to thank him for his professionalism. We wish him the best of luck in the rest of his career.”

it seemed inevitable that Costello would move on as Saints now appear well-blessed in the three-quarters with Josh Simm and Jack Welsby proving able replacements for Kevin Naiqama and Mark Percival.
