ON DAY 6 of our Saints Advent feature we have pulled out this picture of Saints ahead of their game against Warrington at the old Wilderspool ground in October 1981.
It was a picture that captured a Saints team in transition, with only a handful of the older players that had won the Challenge Cup in 1976 remaining.
There is a strong smattering of young St Helens players in there - and this was the first year that Kevin Meadows had nudged the long-serving Les Jones out of the team.
On the far left, back row, is the barrel-chested Welshman Roger Owen.
Back row: Roger Owen, Roy Haggerty, Harry Pinner, Peter Glynn, Peter Gorley, Roy Mathias, Mick Hope, Dennis Litherland.
Front row: Graham Liptrot, Brian Parkes, Steve Peters, Eric Chisnall, John Butler, Kevin Meadows, Mel James.
Unfortunately, Saints lost 13-11 that afternoon - with the points coming from a Steve Peters try and four Peter Glynn goals.
