WE delve into the archives for today's Throwback Thursday and a player who had two impressive stints at the Saints.

Hunslet product Sonny Nickle was a powerful second row who Saints swooped on from the Sheffield Eagles.

Big, aggressive with a fair turn of speed, Nickle's blockbusting displays were popular on the terraces and earned him international honours.

He was part of the team that won the 1993 Premiership, beating Wigan in the final.

Nickle was one of the trio of players - along with Bernard Dwyer and Paul Loughlin - that left for Bradford in the deal that brought Paul Newlove to Saints.

But Ellery Hanley brought him back in 1999 and he would be a tough nut in those back-to-back Super League winning seasons.

The no-nonsense packman added a tough edge to the Saints pack and you would often hear the Scaff singing: "Sonny's gonna get ya!"

Nickle could shift a bit too for a big fella - and his chase in the 1999 Grand Final sticks in the mind.

Nickle played 232 times for the Saints between 1991 and 2002.
