IF you want to know what this Warrington Wolves side can be at its full potential, look no further than Matty Ashton’s try on the stroke of half-time last night.

Take a look at Anthony Gelling’s opener and the delicious inside ball from Blake Austin.

Warrington Guardian:

Or Austin’s own effort and the sublime hands shown by him, Ashton and Ben Murdoch-Masila.

These are all tries that the vintage Wire side of 2011 would have been proud of, when the likes of Lee Briers and Brett Hodgson were chucking the ball around with reckless abandon and tearing teams apart for fun.

And yet Wolves still seem to be flying under the radar when it comes to the high praise of Sky Sports et al.

Warrington Guardian:

That suits us fine.

Far too often, this club has been portrayed as the ‘always our year’ caricature – despite most of those tipping Warrington for the glory being pundits and not the players, coaches or fans.

Let St Helens take the plaudits, and we will happily plug away picking up wins on the quiet and doing the business on the pitch.

Warrington Guardian:

While Wolves haven’t always caught the eye as they did at times yesterday evening during their winning streak of nine in a row, you can’t argue with those results.

And it’s not all been down to the star names.

Anthony Gelling has stepped up to the plate, Jake Mamo is in the form of his life and Ben Currie is looking like his real self again after so much injury woe.

Warrington Guardian:

Matt Davis is the sort of steady Eddie every team needs, and he was well deserving of his moment in the spotlight.

Ashton has surpassed any expectations anyone could have reasonably had of him at the start of the year.

Warrington Guardian:

Make no mistake, this was a real test.

Catalans, though they had their travel troubles, were on top for large periods of this game and on another night could have made the long trip home with the two points in their pocket.

But this is a strong team in primrose and blue and a strong squad, something which offers real promise once this most unique of seasons really gets interesting.

Warrington Guardian:

That strength will be pushed to its limits over the coming days, with the Wire set to lock horns with Salford twice in the league and cup before next week is out.

Steve Price’s men will be relishing that challenge.
