OVERALL winners of the Neville Jones Warrington Schools Cross Country League have been confirmed following the third and final round taking place at muddy Walton Gardens on Saturday.

Ellie Barker (St Elphin’s) repeated her primary girls' wins from the previous rounds with a time of 8mins 04secs putting her ahead of twins Sinead and Cara Gregory (St Monica’s) with 8mins 16secs and 8mins 19secs respectively.

The same three won the overall gold, silver and bronze medals on three, seven and eight points respectively.

In the team event, St Monica’s won on the day with 31 points, with Broomfields 49pts and Cherry Tree 89pts second and third, while the same teams took the overall medals in the same order with St Monica’s on 91pts, Broomfields 181pts and Cherry Tree 269pts.

Tyreece Swinton (Broomfields) won the primary boys race in 7mins 15secs, reaching the finish ahead of Ewan Lawton (Great Sankey) 7mins 31secs and Edward Heavey (Bradshaw) 7mins 40secs.

In the overall standings, the title went to Tyreece on three points, with Isaac McGuffie (Broomfields) second on 10pts and Archie Marwood (Ravenbank) third on 15pts.

Broomfields won the team event on 38pts from Cherry Tree 47pts and Great Sankey 83pts.

Overall Cherry Tree took the title on 142pts from Broomfields 157pts and Great Sankey 355pts.

Twins Imogen and Nia Wharton (Cardinal Newman) took the first two places in the year seven girls’ race in 12mins 16secs and 12mins 33secs, with Eva Jha (Weaverham) next in 12mins 46secs.

In the overall series the twins took gold and silver on three and six points, with Esme Heavey (Bridgewater) taking the bronze on 11pts.

Bridgewater won the team race on the day and also took the overall title.

Lymm High School's Jack Marwood, after playing in a football match that morning, won his third race in the year seven boys’ series in 11mins 25secs from Jacob Pryor (King’s Leadership) 11mins 41secs and Will McGeehan (Bridgewater) third in 13mins 05secs.

Bridgewater took the team title overall.

Alice Nicholson (Great Sankey) won the year eight and nine girls’ race in 12mins 12secs from Harriet Bell (Bridgewater) 12mins 37secs with Evie Owen (Beamont) third in 13mins 47secs.

Overall the same three girls took the medals and Bridgewater took the overall team title.

In the year eight and nine boys' event, Great Sankey took the first three places through Anthony Madew, Jason Mohammed and Elias Irwin in 12mins 40secs, 12mins 43secs and 13mins 00secs and the same three took the overall medals in the same order on four, nine and 10 points.

Great Sankey took the overall team title.

Jasmine Jones won the year 10 and 11 girls’ race on the day and secured the overall title on four points.

Meanwhile, some of Warrington Athletics Club’s runners who took part in the schools’ event contested the third round of the Manchester Area Cross country League at Arrowe Park, Birkenhead, 24 hours later.

In the under 11s boys, Joe Welsby and Ben Woods had a close battle to the finish, crossing in 27th and 28th places in 9mins 52secs and 9mins 53secs respectively, with Thomas Darbyshire 43rd in 11mins 18secs. As a team they finished ninth.

Maisie Devine was 51st in the under 11s girls’ race in 12mins 31secs and Natasha Andrews was 53rd in 13mins 55secs.

In the boys’ under 13s age group Jack Marwood took the pace out hard from the start and led until around 400m from the finish when he was caught and passed by Oberon Kearney (Wirral AC) as his exertions from Saturday took their toll.

Jack hung on to finish in second place on 14mins 01sec while Jacob Pryor was 13th in 15mins.

Twins Imogen and Nia Wharton also ran their second race of the weekend.

Imogen crossed the line seventh in 15mins 48secs and her sister Nia finished 16th in 16mins 33secs.

In the under 15s age group Ben Clayton ran well on his debut for the club in the boys’ race to finish 21st in 22mins 12secs while Molly Wormald was 30th in the girls’ race in 27mins 12secs.

Ellen Turnbull finished 15th in the under 17s women’s race in 43mins 09secs and Fay Humphreys was 17th in 49mins 33secs.

In the senior/under 20s women’s race Fay Lawton finished 61st overall in 44mins 59secs, placing her 26th in the 20-34 age group.

Leanne Astbury clinched 98th overall in 49mins 07secs placing her 15th in the over 35s age group and Olivia Baker was 102nd overall in 49mins 23secs to place fifth under 20.

In the senior/under 20s men’s race Ben Webb came home 33rd overall in 44mins 31secs placing him third under 20 and Daniel Newman travelled up from Bristol where he is working to finish in 103rd place overall in 49mins 49 secs to finish seventh over 50.

Corey Beechall, 15, was the only athlete from the club to compete at the Northern Indoor Open Meeting at Sportcity Manchester where he finished in fifth place in the high jump with 1.35m and 8th in the long jump with 4.57m.

His 58th place overall smashed his personal best.
