NEIL Plunkett had Thursday morning free last week and decided to give Appleton Reservoir a try aiming for a roach session.

It proved too windy for the waggler, so he catapulted hemp into his swim which set the range to clip up his quiver tip.

Plunkett kicked off with maggot on the hook that produced a couple of small roach so he swapped to a single grain of corn on a fine wire hook with his feeder loaded with groundbait and hemp.

The change brought a few dozen roach, best a pound and the smallest around 8oz, until he called it a day at lunchtime. The iridescent blue flash of a Kingfisher repeatedly crossing the reservoir in front of him also added to a pleasurable mornings fishing.

After an enforced six week break from fishing following an operation on his hand, Anthony Rough finally got back on the bank on Sunday morning and enjoyed a three-hour session on the River Dee at Worthenbury.

He set up a centrepin reel and trotted an Avon float through his swim with double maggot on the hook. He caught 12 grayling up to 1lb, several dace, salmon parr, plus one brown trout.

The carp at Grey Mist seem to be feeding well with reports of a few catches this past week notably a cracking 23lbs common, one a brace landed by Ste Worrall.

Gavin Nevin had a 19-pounder on his Saturday overnighter. Liam Jones fed corn with two fake pieces on the during a four hour session to land four tench, best weighed in at 7-4-0.

Stuart Sargood took his young son Joshua for his first fishing session at Ackers Pit this past weekend and fishing maggot he caught his first fish, a roach, which most definitely he will never forget and hopefully is just the start of many future angling experiences.

Ian Kennedy was back at Statham Pool on Sunday with his mate Allan Biesty where Ian landed four carp but Allan (who said that he wasn’t going home until he landed one) had to finally admit defeat.

The Sunday Mersey match was fished this week at Mersey Walk was won by Derek Bibby who started on the feeder and maggot which accounted for a brace of 10oz skimmers and roach but changed to pole and maggot to add more roach for a weight of 8-15-0.

Match organiser Ray Boden took second place with 7-10-0 made up of perch and roach caught on pole and maggot tactics.

Our Disabled and Over 60’s match on Monday held at the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane was won by Barry Chambers with a weight of 6-3-0.

He started off with worm and caster but after a blank period a change to pinkie saw a bonus 4lbs bream in his net to which he added a couple of pounds of roach.

On the adjoining peg, Roy Rogers took second place with 5-3-0 and also landed a 4lbs bream plus small roach alternating between red maggot and pinkie on the hook.
