CHRIS Hill admits he was “embarrassed” to be a part of a poor Warrington Wolves performance at Leeds Rhinos last night.

The Wire were pushed down to fourth spot in Super League after losing 26-4 at Headingley and now face a much more difficult route through the play-offs.

If they are to reach Old Trafford, they must win through two elimination games and a semi final, starting with a home game against Castleford Tigers on Thursday.

However, Hill says they can forget about a second consecutive Grand Final appearance if they perform as they did against the Rhinos.

“It was embarrassing, to be fair,” he said.

“We just weren’t good enough and made far too many individual errors.

“We’ve got to learn and learn quick because our season could be over on Thursday.

“I never saw that coming, but I thought Leeds played well.

“We weren’t at the races – it’s as simple as that – and we’ve got to clean it up for Thursday. It’s a short turnaround but we’ve got to go hard at it.

“We know we’re probably one of the best knock-out teams in the comp.

“Our backs are against the wall and we know we can do it, but we won’t if we turn up like we did here.”

Wolves have held second position for most of the season, but a poor run of form either side of their Challenge Cup Final victory has seen them overtaken by both Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils.

They now go into every game knowing defeat will end their season.

“People would have written us off whether we finished second, third or fourth,” co-captain Hill said.

“We’ll keep it on the outside – we know what kind of team we’ve got.

“Castleford are a good side. I thought they had a real dig against Wigan the other night.

“They will come to us fired up because they are in the same predicament as we are.

“We need to bring that extra one per cent out of ourselves. If we don’t, we don’t deserve to go any further.

“Every week is a final now so we all have to do our jobs.”
