THE next step of the Pilkington FC’s ambitious journey towards the National League continues on Saturday at Ruskin Drive face Cleator Moor Celtic, 3pm.

Three back-to-back promotions have seen them climb to the NWCFL North Division.

And they want townsfolk to back them, starting this week when they have a big day planned and have even signed up Neil Holding as the guest announcer for the day.

Co-manager Ste Palfrey said: “Last season was phenomenal - we took over relatively early which meant we were able to make an impact on the slow start we had.

“All the managers know the history of this club, its status within St Helens and its values of promoting youth. We had the nucleus of a good young side who had been part of the club’s recent successes and we felt we just needed to instil better standards and a tougher, more competitive attitude.

“It really couldn’t have turned out any better. The lads totally bought into what we were trying to do and the change in mindset was fantastic to see.

“They only lost two of the 21 remaining league games ending the season with an eight game winning run.

“Personally, to win it on goal difference was all the better after we lost out on the Cheshire Prem title in 2011 by goal difference.

The new campaign at a higher level will, of course bring its own challenges, but it is one Pilks are ready to grasp.

“It’s going to be a challenge and we’re going to have one hell of a go at it - the culture of this club has always been about winning and we have retained the majority of the squad who have already proven that they have the mental toughness and focus to win a title.”
