Liverpool St Helens10
Widnes 23
LIVERPOOL St Helens signed off the season with a determined performance in the Lancashire Leagues MJ Worsley Cup Final, eventually coming off second best to a lively Widnes outfit.
Both sides deserve huge credit for producing such a decent game in dreadful conditions with relentless heavy rain and strong winds, with West Park to be congratulated for their excellent hosting of the match.
LSH had plenty of possession, plenty of territory and plenty of opportunities.
Sadly they made too many errors at crucial times which were seized upon by their eager opponents to eventually win them the game. None more so than the all-important first try which came in the 39th minute with Widnes leading a tight contest by two penalties to one. LSH had launched a rumbling move to reach the Widnes line when, after at least half a dozen close range efforts the ball was lost for Widnes to kick clear and score a break-away try from the full length of the pitch, converted for a 3-13 scoreline at half time.
To many of the Moss Lane Faithful shivering in the stand, this was the game’s turning point.
Disaster struck again in the 62nd minute when Widnes scored their second try, converted, bringing a tremendous reply from LSH.
They finally launched a successful attack bringing a try for Jordan Gibson, then converted by the impressive centre.
A further spirited response from LSH in the final ten minutes was ultimately halted by another Widnes penalty just before the close.
