THIS week saw St. Helens Sutton A.C. runners take to the trails and road over distances from the relatively short and fast 5km to the mighty marathon.

They were led by debutant Jon-Jo Doherty, who marked his first run in Sutton colours with a dominant victory at the Halewood Willowbrook 5km race.

Doherty equalled his personal best time of 16 minutes exactly, which gave him a victory margin of 46 seconds.

Meanwhile, two of the club’s veterans were on hand to put in strong displays at Thursday night’s Horwich 5km Trail Race Series.

Mark Liptrot was the first Sutton runner home as he finished an impressive 10th place, stopping the clock at 21:33.

Phil Robinson – usually most at home in the pole vault – was also impressive as he came home 39th in 24:49.

Sunday saw three of the club’s runners take on the Greater Manchester Marathon alongside an array of St Helens runners.

Barry Graney finished in 3hours 33mins 19secs, while Rachel Beesley and Rachel Wilcock both narrowly missed dipping under the four-hour barrier.
