IT is going to be a big test for the Saints defending their 100 per cent record as we travel to Castleford on Friday.

The Tigers are on our tail, that’s for sure, having only dropped two points themselves so far this season.

They beat a much-improved Salford 24-20 at the weekend but their highly-respected coach Daryl Powell was quick to warn they will have to up their game when they face the Betfred Super League leaders.

One man who has continued to lead from the front for Castleford is Paul McShane, probably their best player for the past three seasons.

He has been the key indicator in their side, especially with the loss of Luke Gale through injury. He is someone Saints must shut down.

Looking back to last week — it was a clinical second-half display from Saints, after a scratchy opening 40 against the Giants.

Justin Holbrook was quick to praise Huddersfield’s first-half performance, admitting we were lucky to be in front at the break.

Huddersfield can be a difficult place to go with a lack of atmosphere (and annoying cow bell!) and maybe this told on our performance in some parts - something that can’t happen against Cas, who are in a confident mood themselves.

Lachlan Coote caused the Giants problems in attack with his creativity and running game, but also his defensive positional play was outstanding. To add to that, his kicking game was excellent, earning the praises of Giants coach Simon Woolford who suggested he suffocated the home team.

Meanwhile, great news to hear winger Regan Grace has signed a new deal, extending his contract for a further two years.

The 22-year-old has established himself as a first-choice wing man this season. There is no doubt there are still a few weaknesses in his game that are sometimes exploited by the opposition, but one thing you can’t give or train into a player is blistering pace, which Regan has in bucket loads!

His ability to skip across field, taunting defences until he finds a gap is his biggest strength, along with his natural winger’s knack to finish tries. It was also great to hear how Grace said he’s loving his dream job and is determined to continue improving his game.

Next up for Saints, according to the Rugby League trade press, is to secure the long-term services of Théo Fages. The Frenchman is allowed to speak to rival clubs in May, unless a new deal is agreed with the Saints.

I can’t imagine this even being in doubt. Why would you want to leave the best club in the Betfred Super League? And why would they let him!

One thing I love about Theo, aside from his half-back role demands, he is not shy of getting stuck in! He certainly puts his body on the line and doesn’t let anyone take liberties... maybe that’s the Frenchman in him!

So, looking forward to Friday and despite the confidence of the Tigers, how can I back against the mighty Saints!

It’s going to be tough for the boys at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle, but I’ll go for a Saints win by 10pts, which is 2/1 at Betfred, with Regan Grace celebrating his new deal with the first try of the game, which can be backed at 9/1.
