HAYDOCK progressed to the second round of the Coral Challenge Cup with a hard fought 28-16 win away at Dewsbury based NCL outfit Shaw Shaw Cross Sharks.

A large vociferous travelling support from the Haydock faithful saw tries came from Connor Smith, David Frodsham, Andrew Bacon, Dean Dollin and Kyle Braithwaite. Full back Ste Jones was impressive with the boot landing four out of five conversions.

Centre Dean Dollin took the Man.of the Match accolade with an impressive all round performance, closely followed by Connor Smith, Andrew Bacon, Danny Gee and Carl Cheetham.

Meanwhile more than 500 local spectators descended upon Clock Face Miners Recreational club to watch Clock put up a tough display, yet go down 0–24 to NCL Premiers Siddal in the first round of the Coral Challenge Cup.

Clock struggled with Siddal’s ruck speed in the early exchanges and conceded a number of penalties as they tried to contain the visitors attack. This help Siddal march up field where on four minutes they scored out wide. Clock showed their potential when quick hands put Luke Leyden through a gap but, the ball was knocked on in the slippery conditions. Siddal scored three more tries before the break to take a 0-24 half time lead. Clock’s best chance of the half again falling to Leyden when he intercepted a pass to race 50m downfield only to pass to the Siddal full back.

The second half was much better from Clock as they matched Siddal in every department. However, despite creating numerous chances, Siddal’s defence held firm and the second half finished scoreless.

Thatto Heath progressed into tonight's draw after beating Stanningley 32-6.

The second round draw is on Monday 28 January at 6pm.
