FORMER Saints scrum-half Matty Smith says he is desperate to get back into Super League action after taking part in his first training session in Perpignan this morning, writes Steve Brady of Catalan Media.

Smith joined up with his new Catalans Dragons team-mates for a Monday morning run-out in warm sunshine at the Stade Gilbert Brutus and joked: “I hope it’s raining back home!”

The 31-year-old half-back spent most of the 2018 season in the background at St Helens as 22-year-old Danny Richardson took over as first-choice number seven. Smith’s decision to leave his hometown club was purely because he wanted first-team action.

“Danny’s a brilliant young player and he’s been outstanding this season. I kept waiting for my shot but it never came because he was playing so well.

“For a young player to perform so consistently throughout the season is outstanding. So my shot never came and I’m here now Perpignan and I’m really excited about next season.

“I did have other options in Super League but I think they are creating something special over here in France and I want to be a part of it.

“It’s a new challenge in a new country with a different language and lifestyle so it was really appealing.”

Smith has found a house for his family in nearby St Esteve (so he is still technically a Saint!) and has settled in quickly to life in France.

“The food’s good here, no Pimmy’s pies which is probably a good thing for me, but my wife and children have settled in well so far and we’re really happy with the move. Even the dog’s come over with us!

“The club have been brilliant, their Welfare Officer Sandra has looked after us, showing us around and answering all our questions. We’re really impressed by the club, the local people and the area.”

Smith said the south-of-France lifestyle has its attractions but insists he is not here “on holiday.”

“I’ve come over here to play rugby and I want to win things. I’ve played before with Michael McIlorum, Lewis Tierney and Sam Tomkins at Wigan and Jodie Broughton at Salford. These players are winners, in fact since the Challenge Cup win, the whole club has got a winning mentality.

“I’ve worked before with coach Steve McNamara at England level and he’s a great coach. He brought the best out of me before and I’m looking forward to working with him again.”

“I just want to get out on that pitch and give it my best. I cannot wait to get stuck into the new season.”
