STEVE Price says The Wire need to “evolve” their offensive style rather than change it altogether in 2019.

After the 12-4 defeat to Wigan in Saturday’s Super League Grand Final, Warrington’s attack came under criticism as they failed to make the most of the territory and possession they had.

It is not the first time The Wire’s offence has come under scrutiny in 2018, but Price insists they do not need to start again in that respect.

However, he does admit that things do need “tidying up” when the players reconvene for pre-season training and that things will have to change in order to adapt to the strengths of their new signings, including marquee half-back Blake Austin.

“It’s been a successful season to make two finals in one year,” he told the Guardian.

“A lot of hard work has gone into it and I’m super proud of where we’ve come from.

“We have to get away from it all now, reflect and go again. We will work even harder next year.

“We’ve got a backbone now. We don’t get walked over.

“We have to tidy up a few things from an offensive point of view and we’ll sort that out during the off-season.

“We’ll have some new personnel as well and we’ll have to play to their strengths.

“I think we were second in terms of tries scored throughout the season, so there’s a lot of good things we were doing.

“We created two try-scoring opportunities on Saturday when Stef made those line breaks. It was just unfortunate nobody else was around him.

“We are doing a lot of good things offensively and defensively.

“We have to evolve, though, and tweak a few things to stay ahead of the game and be a top Super League club.”

The defeat at Old Trafford means The Wire have lost their past six major finals. It is also the second time in three seasons that Warrington have appeared in and lost both the Challenge Cup Final and Super League Grand Final.

However, Price says the 2018 campaign will still go down as “something special” to him and that it only serves to increase his excitement for next year.

“When we first came together, our goal was to be a top-four team and we achieved that,” he said.

“To get to two finals beyond that was something special.

“We were short in them both though and it’s still very raw. We’re still hurting.

“With people like Jason Clark, Blake Austin, Lama Tasi and Matt Davis coming in, we can definitely be excited.

“It will be different again and we have to adapt to that.”

The Wire squad – including Austin and fellow new additions Jason Clark, Matt Davis and Lama Tasi – will reconvene for pre-season training on Monday, November 19.

The 11 Warrington players involved with their international teams will return slightly later, with pre-season expected to follow a similar format to last year – an army camp before Christmas before a training camp in January.

Ben Murdoch-Masila will undergo minor ankle surgery on Wednesday after playing for Tonga in Saturday’s Test against Australia in Auckland, but he is expected to play a good part in pre-season, as is Ben Currie as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury.

The Wire are expected to face Widnes Vikings in a pre-season friendly, but it is thought that game will take place in January as opposed to late December.
