SAINTS may have picked up one trophy on Friday night but two young fans believe they walked away with the biggest prize of all - Ben Barba’s boots.

Six-year-old pals Connor Raftery and Finley Foster, who both play rugby for Haydock Newbies, were clapping the team off during the lap of honour at the end of the win against Hull when it happened.

The ace full back, who was the last man walking around, stopped in front of the West Stand and made a beeline for the group with his boots in hand.

It was definitely a case of being at the right place at the right time.

Connor’s dad, Jason, said: “There were loads of people there - but he must have seen Connor and Finley.

“To a rugby fan it is like getting a Mike Tyson boxing glove. Even I was shaking when they came over.

“He initially gave them to my mate John (Foster) - but he said ‘one each for Connor and Finley’ because they are best mates

“The grew up together at Grange Valley nursery and even though they are at different schools now, they both play Haydock Newbies where I coach.”

It was a good weekend for Connor, as he won the man of the match award the day after playing against Thatto Heath.

Now, like all Saints fans, they are hoping that Barba’s new boots will help him dance his way to Old Trafford and end the year in the way he started.

“Connor has been a season ticket holder for three years.

“When we signed Barba he watched him on YouTube and was so excited about him coming over.

“I just hope he can do the business now and win it,” Jason said.

Haydock Newbies, who the two lads play for, are going well having won both of the games they have played so far.

Jason added: "Me and my cousin Greg Dale coach them.

"It has been together for three years but have only just been able to start playing because of their age. They love it."
