THE funeral of popular top rugby union referee and schoolteacher David Matthews will take place on Monday, 1 October.
David, who died last week aged 71, was a respected member of the refereeing fraternity, who reached the highest level of officiating.
He was also a popular PE schoolmaster, teaching at Grange Park School, West Park High School and then De La Salle, until his retirement 10 years ago.
The day will be a celebration of David's life and - with the exception of club blazers - his wish was for those attending to avoid wearing black.
The service will be held at Rainford All Saints Church at noon before moving on to the St Helens Crematorium.
All will be then be welcomed to Liverpool St Helens RUFC on Moss Lane where he as a member for more than 50 years.
