ST Helens Striders rounded off 2006 with their annual presentation night at the YMCA Sport and Fitness Centre last week.

Trophies and prizes were handed out to club members for their achievements and improvements during the year.

The contest for the title of St Helens Striders 2006 Grand Prix Champion was a real cliffhanger with John Lingard just pipping Danny Fegan and Les Abbott by the narrowest of margins.

In a unique double John Lingard also won the club's Summer Handicap Series with Dawn Platt and Steve Pickavance finishing second and third respectively over the eight race series.

The popular Christmas Handicap Run men's title was won by Les Abbott with John Lingard and Danny Fegan close behind.

The women's Christmas handicap run was won by Claire Pickavance with Carol Foster and Dawn Platt taking second and third spot.

A special award was given to club coach Frank McAllister for his efforts over the year.

Club spokesperson Brian Banawich said: "It has been a very good year for Striders.

"Club membership is up to its highest level for years and the number of new women members is particularly encouraging for the future.

"We have a club ethos of achieving fitness through fun in a friendly environment."
