RAINHILL travelled to Liverpool in Med Imaging Liverpool Competition Division One and snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat.

Rainhill elected to bat on the excellent county wicket but poor shot selection resulted in a low total.

After an early loss, Rotheram (45) and Brown (24) took the score to 73 for 1 before Rainhill’s usual collapse took them to 128 for 8. Dale, batting at 10, added a valuable 21 but could not stop Rainhill being bowled out for a poor 164 from 50 overs.

In response, Australian opener Seymore punished everything short or wide. His 93 from 99 balls provided the backbone for Liverpool’s innings.

Qureshi’s 24 overs, 5 for 50, kept it tight at one end. With 12 overs to go, Liverpool were 159 for 7 and expected a comfortable win.

An inspired bowling change, bringing in Veacock, was immediately successful as he ripped out the leg stump.

His fifth ball hit middle stump and his sixth ball hit off stump, leaving last-man Macdonald stranded at the non-striker’s end watching in astonishment.

Rainhill’s seconds scored 254 for 8 against Wavertree, with contributions from Yate (58), Edmundson (47), McKeown (32), Tilley (23no) and Ryan (20).

Wavertree lost wickets at regular intervals to the bowling of O’Toole (5 for 60) and Gannon (2 for 35) and finished short on 217 all out in 41 overs.
