Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses after an 84-year-old man was assaulted and robbed of a three-figure sum of money.

The incident, on Tuesday at around 3:35pm, happened after the man had used an ATM at the Royal Bank of Scotland on Bernard Street in Leith.

After using the ATM, the man was walking along Constitution Street when he was approached from behind and knocked to the ground.

Having picked himself up, he noticed that money had been stolen from him before returning to the bank to report the incident.

Officers have urged anyone who may be able to assist them with their inquiries to come forward.

The suspect is described as being a white male, around 5ft 5ins tall with a large build, fair hair and is said to have been wearing light grey jogging bottoms and a red top.

Detective Sergeant Mark Lumsden said: “While the elderly man was not injured during this robbery, he was incredibly upset at the theft of his money and we are conducting various lines of local inquiry to identify the suspect.

“Anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the Constitution Street area on Tuesday afternoon, or who has any other information relevant to this investigation, should contact police immediately.”
