My husband has written a poem he’d like to share with your readers. He is a key worker. I hope you are able to print it and it brings a smile in these difficult times.

Maria Whittle

How blind we were to begin with,
We insisted this was nothing new,
These things don’t happen in countries like ours,
More people here die from the flu.
No matter your creed or your colour,
This affects all people the same,
The goal is to find a solution,
There’s no benefit in looking to blame.
I wish I had paid more attention,
To the things that matter the most,
Hugging my parents meeting my friends,
To a walk with my kids down the coast.
I think this is why this has happened,
For all mankind to open its eyes,
To appreciate what we’ve been given,
As for idle hands time truly flies.
This country is built on acceptance,
To live here they are willing to fight,
Skilled workers shown nothing but ignorance,
Now we clap for them each Thursday night.
One thing I’ve learned from all of this,
And will make the most of once I’m allowed,
Is to acknowledge the smile of a stranger,
As before I’d feel alone in a crowd.
So once all of this is over,
And for now all we can do is wait,
Let’s remember how we’ve all pulled together,
And once again make Britain great.
