WHILST I’m convinced a high percentage of the population is fully aware of the truly horrific impact COVID-19 is having on society, I was not in the least bit surprised when St Helens’ confirmed cases and deaths were published.

As a front line worker in social care, and having family and friends working in surrounding hospitals and on the ICU wards, I was stunned and disgusted at the behaviour of a large number of people who shopped in Tesco in St Helens on Thursday morning during the so called “vulnerable persons’ hour”.

What a joke!

Total disregard of social distancing rules.

The same lady kept getting within a foot or two of me, because she “just wanted to grab something quick”.

After the third time, I asked her to stop and explained the danger of what she was doing. Her response: “It’s OK, I’m alright”.

Another lady, coughing and spluttering into the open air and over her trolley, was a another sight to behold, not a tissue or sleeve in sight.

In my opinion here is a reason why St Helens and surrounding areas are now suffering the deadly consequences of this horrendous virus.

It is because people still do not believe it is serious and are not following social distancing rules.

This pandemic has brought out the best in most people and the worst in others.
