JACKIE Dutton’s letter (January 31) regarding MP Conor McGinn confuses “delegate” with “representative”.
Our system of democracy makes MPs representatives of the electorate, not delegates like shop stewards.
We pay MPs to be experts in the political field (for example we have a right to expect Mr McGinn to have read and understood the 500-plus pages of Theresa May’s proposed deal – I confess I haven’t) and to exercise their judgement in what they believe to be the best interests of their electorate.
They are under no obligation to blindly follow ‘popular’ opinion.
