Prescot Cables 1 Ashton United 3.

Prescot Cables went out of the FA Cup when thy lost to Ashton United in an ill tempered affair at Hope Street.

For the second successive game Cables had a player sent off when James Thomas was shown the red card after a tussle with Ashton’s Danny Caldecott.

The game started in bright sunshine, and it was Cables who had the first opportunity when James Thomas intercepted a stray pass and seeing the Ashton goalkeeper off his line tried his hand with a speculative effort from 45 yards only to see it clear the bar.

Ashton were quick to reply a cross from the left by Burns finding Kosylo on the right side of the box who turned and fired over.

Ashton continued to press and on 9 minutes took the lead. A fine move down the right ended with Kosylo crossing to the far post for Burns to head home.

Five minutes later and Ashton increased their lead when from a free kick taken on the left by Burke was headed home by Ashton skipper Chris Lynch.

Davidson tested the Ashton defence with a fine run down the right and his accurate cross was punched off the head of Bathurst by Ashton keeper Smith.

Cables were awarded a free kick on 24 minutes just outside the box but Thomas’s shot was straight at Ashton keeper Smith who saved comfortably.

Ashton forced a corner taken by Burke and met at the far post by Deegan but Parisi saved well. Ashton were comfortably in control at this stage and threatening to add to their lead.

On 33 minutes Banda made another fine run down the right for Cables but over hit his cross. A fine cross by Ashton left back Caldecott was headed away for a corner by Gary Williams. Another fine run down the right from Kosylo found Baguley whose shot was deflected fro a corner. From the corner Frost headed wide of the Cables goal.

Just before the break Frost crossed from the right for Deegan to rattle the cross bar with a powerful header.

After the break Ashton threatened again and Murphy was booked for a late challenge on the edge of the box. The fee kick taken by Baguley sailed just wide of the left hand post.

James Thomas beat an Ashton defender but instead of pulling the ball back for one of his team mates he opted to shoot and fired from a tight angle. Ashton skipper Lynch was then booked for a foul on Thomas. Thomas took the free kick himself and sent a powerful 20 yard shot into the right corner of the net to pull a goal back for Cables. However Thomas then blotted his copy book when he was sent off just a few minutes later after a tussle with Caldecott who was lucky not to join him when he retaliated. Tempers started to fray and Jamie McCulloch found his name in the referee’s note book and was quickly followed by Ashton’s Deegan.

Cables then had a spell of pressure and went close when a long range effort from Webb just cleared the bar. Ellis replaced Bathurst as Cables went in search of the equaliser. A free kick taken by Webb was headed wide by Williams and from a free kick from Booth, Rimmer saw his goal bound header pushed over the bar by Smith.

As Cables surged forward with time running out Ashton caught them on the break in injury time. Baker collected a long throw from keeper Smith surged down the right and crossed for Barlow to side foot home from the edge of the box.
