Town broke their losing streak on Tuesday when a goal seven minutes into added on time saw them gain a share of the spoils in the derby contest against Ashton Athletic.

After an uneventful first half the visitors broke the deadlock in the 50th minute as the lively Ward headed a long ball past the Town stopper on the edge of the box before collecting and dispatching the ball into the net.

The hosts were not behind for long as a dangerous corner was only cleared to Standley on the right and his centre picked out the run of Edwards who evaded his marker to stab the ball home.

The visitors were gifted a second goal when the Town backline coughed the ball up to Ward on the edge of their own box and he gave Newbrook no chance firing a powerful effort into the top right hand corner of the net.

Deep in added on time Town again profited from a corner as Rimmer whipped a tantalising cross under the cross bar and Edwards met it steering his header home from close range to ensure a point for St Helens.

The weekend trip to Padiham was one Town will be looking to quickly forget, behind after 20 second they drew level on the hour when Rimmer found the bottom left hand corner of the net with a penalty after Ashton had seen his run stopped by foul means. Padiham were quickly back in front as a big long ball released Tinker to register his second before Sherlock’s overhead kick made it 3-1 and a dubiously awarded penalty was dispatched by Garvin to round off the scoring.
