A DOG found collapsed in the street had been stabbed several times.

Dog wardens were alerted earlier today (Friday, July 27) when neighbours at Ashtons Green in Parr discovered the animal - weak and in pain - slumped on a field at the Duckeries.

Remarkably the blue grey crossbreed lurcher/greyhound survived and is now in holding kennels.

After examining the dog’s other injuries, wardens believe that it may have been used for hunting. It is believed to be around four to five years old and is not microchipped.

St Helens Council is appealing that anyone who knows the dog and its owner, to come forward, so a proper investigation can be carried out.

Information will be reported to the RSPCA, in the hope that it will result in criminal proceedings.

Wardens describe the dog as friendly, despite its terrible trauma.

It will be re-homed in a week via Leigh Cats and Dogs centre to a home without any other animals and where it can be treated with care and attention.
