TERRY Broughton writes; “I'm afraid your readers may be disappointed if they expected to see 70013 "Oliver Cromwell" on April 1, as the Railway Touring Company switched the locomotive to 6201 "Princess Elizabeth".

“Also the trip was diesel hauled on the return journey!”

It was one of Terry’s picture I used in the "Where were we?" feature two weeks ago, the one of the old railway line near Saints Stadium. Colin Greenall explains; “We are standing at the corner of Holme Road and Knowsley Road (circa 1960s).

“Knowsley Road is on the left hand side of the picture. In the centre back ground is the new stand of St.Helens RFC. The pylon is to the rear of the stand and straddling the track.

“The railway line is the Eccleston branch of the old St Helens Railway Company (opened in March 1859) which was initially built to serve Gillars Green Colliery, but with the intention of connecting with the Liverpool and Manchester Railway at Huyton.

Behind the photographer would be the Triplex Glass Works.

“The pylon on the right was situated in a farmer’s field where many a budding rugby player fine tuned his sidestep around the cow pats as the local kids re-enacted games watch at the nearby Saints ground.”
