ST HELENS Sinfonietta has been offered a grant from the Community Foundation for Merseyside to run workshops on classical music in each of five primary schools in St Helens.

Purpose of the workshops is to offer opportunities for the youngsters to be introduced to classical music and to be encouraged to develop an interest.

The schools selected on this occasion were Queens Park, Blackbrook St Mary's, Broad Oak, Earlestown District and St Anne's, Sutton.

Two main conditions of the grant are that the workshops must be after school and all the children must be volunteers. Adult volunteers will also be on hand and members of the Sinfonietta committee will be there to support.

There will be 17 musicians at each workshop and there will be no cost to the school or the children.

This is an incredible opportunity for the youngsters and one that the orchestra and the musical director are committed to.

Also in an attempt to foster the talents of local young people, the Sinfonietta is presenting A Young Player's Concert on Saturday, June 10 at the United Reformed Church, St Helens starting at 7.30pm. This promises to be an evening of presentations by some of the most talented musicians in the area.
