WITH regard to Mr Walling's letter 'Faggots? They were Savory Ducks!' (Dear Star). You say you can't believe someone from St Helens used the word faggots. I still buy them in London and the name faggots is on the box.
I remember the shop in St Helens and I think it was called Walkadenes. Blackburns did open a shop next door it was a butchers. I also worked for a spell at Caines on the corner of Wilson Street. I lived further up next to the wooden hut Barkers... you are right they were very good pies.
I won't mention chips because I was fed up with them, but we always took a tea towel to cover ours up, eee! very posh.
I remember the shop opposite the baths also, I always had a pudding cake.
Eee those were the days.
