RSPCA bosses are trying to find a home for a slimmed down dog that once weighed a vastly obese 11-stone.

Barney the eight-year-old Dalmatian lived on a diet of junk food - including crisps and chocolate - and ballooned to more than twice the size of a normal dog.

His former owner, John Green, 50, from Chelford Road, Macclesfield was banned by the magistrates from keeping dogs for ten years.

But despite widespread media coverage, Barney, who has shed more than four and a half stone, is still to find a loving home.

Chris Walkden, manager of the Warrington, Halton and St Helens Branch of the RSPCA said: “We just can’t understand why Barney is still here. He is a lovely dog with the most affectionate, playful nature.

“He has worked really hard to slim down to just under 40kg (6st 3lbs) and now, deservedly, takes full advantage of his new svelte figure – chasing balls, bouncing through the fields - he really is a bundle of energy and fun.

“He would be happy around older children but would suit being an only pet so is looking for a household with no other animals preferably.

“If I could make a plea on Barney’s behalf it would be to please adopt him if you think you can offer him all the love, time and care he needs.

“He is a sweet, affectionate, special dog who has already been through so much. If any dog deserves a happy ending, it’s Barney so, if you can, please consider making this Christmas Barney’s best one yet. Just make sure Christmas treats are kept to a minimum!”

The animal centre is on Slutchers Lane, Bank Quay, Warrington and is open from noon to 4pm every day except Tuesday.
