POLICE are waiting for the results of a post-mortem after St Helens supermarket worker Maureen Marsh died after she was hurt tackling a suspected shoplifter.

Officers were called just before 2pm on Saturday to the Morrisons supermarket, Baxters Lane, Sutton, to reports Mrs Marsh had been injured.

Fifty-six-year-old Maureen had been trying to stop a suspected shoplifter leaving the store earlier in the day.

Maureen, a well known mother-of-three and grandmother from Parr, went home but later collapsed and was taken to hospital, where she died on Sunday.

Last night a man, who police say is aged 32 and from St Helens, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody.

Today two of Maureen's sons, Ste and Lee, told reporters she was a "special" mum.

They revealed she had been due to fly out for a holiday in Benidorm on the day she died.

Ste told the BBC:"To get a phonecall to say she had been pushed over in work and then all the emotions that go with it is just devastating.

"We are a close family and she was a special person.

Everyone in St Helens and around this area all love her."

Lee, a rugby league player with Leigh, told the BBC: "She did so much for me, we can't believe she is not here. It is all really hard."

A police statement read: “The woman went home after the incident, where she later collapsed and was taken to hospital.

“She died yesterday (Sunday, 19 April) in hospital.

“Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the store at this time or anyone who has information about the incident to contact them.

“Merseyside Police is appealing for shoppers who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and make contact with police on 0151 777 1577 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
