THE epic journalistic voyage that ALAN WHALLEY embarked on more than 60 years ago reaches journey’s end this week with the final Whalley’s World column gracing the St Helens Star.
Alan’s page has been a signal feature of the Star’s outstanding success story since our launch back in 1973.
Whalley’s World attracted a massive readership over the years with loyal fans of Alan’s cobwebby corner delving into his masterly-crafted tales of bygone days not just in our pages but with the advent of the internet adding a new global network of fans amongst expat Sintelliners.
Down the years he has treated townsfolk to a rich portrait of our heritage, brilliantly evoking memories of old time characters like legendary town hardman Jonty Pilkington, champion swiller Joe Johnson and a host of other personalities who used to figure in our town’s rich past.
