Youths 'start fire' after emergency wildfire warning

POLICE are appealing for information after a group of youths reportedly started a fire at a golf course less than a day after a nationwide wildfire warning was sent to mobile phones across the UK.

Merseyside Police said a small fire was reported at Eccleston Park Golf Club in Prescot at around 5.45pm on Saturday, August 15.

A spokesperson said: "We received a report that a group of youths had started a small fire at Eccleston Park Golf Club at around 5.45pm on Saturday, August 15. No damage was caused."

The incident came less than 24 hours after an emergency alert warned people not to undertake activities that could start fires due to a very high wildfire risk.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to the golf course at 5.43pm and arrived on scene at 5.50pm.

A spokesperson said: "Fire crews attended an incident on Eccleston Park Golf Course on the evening of 15 August.

"Crews were alerted at 5.43pm and arrived on scene at 5.50pm.

"Fire crews were stood down on arrival. This was a piece of wood that was involved in fire and extinguished prior to crews' arrival."

No damage was reported as a result of the incident.

Police are now appealing for information.
