RESIDENTS and businesses have been hit with a loss of water supply in St Helens today.

St Helens Council said a water main had failed in the basement of the former Woolworths building which has resulted in a loss of water for businesses in the Hall Street, Church Street and George Street areas.

The issue has been reported to United Utilities.

Properties in the WA10 area, including the town centre, been affected by the outage.

A St Helens Council statement said: "It appears that an old valve on an existing water main has failed in the basement of the former Woolworths building which has resulted in a loss of water for businesses in the Hall Street, Church Street and George Street area.

"United Utilities have been contacted immediately and are now on scene.

"United Utilities will now carry out works to repair the mains so as to prevent future issues. We apologise for the inconvenience."

A United Utilities statement issued at 3.35pm added: "We’re sorry if you’re experiencing no water or low water pressure at the moment. We’ve been carrying out essential work in the area and can confirm this is the cause.

"We’re really sorry for the disruption and are working hard to get your taps flowing again as soon as possible.

If your water looks discoloured, don’t worry - this can happen when natural sediments in the pipes are disturbed. You can find helpful advice on our discoloured water page.

We’ll continue to monitor the situation to make sure your supply returns to normal as quickly as possible."
