A SUSPECTED gas smell led to an investigation.

Concerns were raised about a smell in the area around Haresfinch Road but following an investigation, engineers confirmed that the smell is not natural gas.

Gas company Cadent received reports of the smell and attended the scene this morning, Thursday, June 11.

Ian Royal, customer operations area manager at Cadent (North West), said: "We are aware of reports of a smell similar to natural gas in and around Haresfinch Road, St. Helens.

"We take every report seriously and over the years have traced the odour to various causes, from factory discharge, sewage and even durian fruit.

"In this instance, our engineers have confirmed that the smell is not natural gas."

Cadent also confirmed that while gas pipe repairs are currently underway on Haresfinch Road, the reported odour is not related to this work.

Mr Royal added: "Unrelated, we do have an engineering team currently working on Haresfinch Road to repair a section of gas pipe that is expected to be completed by the end of this week.

"However, the reported smells are not related to this work."
