THE 60th anniversary of the four-cups Saints is a good opportunity to look at a Wembley try scorer from the 1966 win over Wigan.

Tommy Bishop only spent three-and-half seasons at his hometown club, after joining from Barrow in 1966, but he had a huge impact.

Not least of those was displacing skipper Alex Murphy to the centres.

The scrum half was a key member of the 1966 team, scoring a crucial try from his own kick in the Challenge Cup Final win against Wigan.

He toured with Great Britain that summer – and certainly caught the eye of the hosts.

Bishop became Saints club captain for the 1968/9 campaign – one in which they retained the Lancashire Cup.

But it would be his last major cup at Saints, and in the ‘summer of 69’ Bishop was enticed Down Under to the Cronulla Sutherland club.

He left Knowsley Road with a tally of 47 tries in 147 appearances.

But he did great things in transforming to Cronulla, guiding them to the 1973 Premiership Final.
