POLICE have explained why emergency services were in attendance at an estate on Tuesday evening.

Emergency services were seen descending around the area of Priory Gardens, in Windlehurst, off Hard Lane, from around 8pm.

Police, fire and rescue service and ambulance vehicles were in attendance in the vicinity.

When asked about this, a Merseyside Police spokeswoman said this related to "a concern for safety of a man on a nearby street who had reportedly caused an injury to his arm".

She added: "The man was detained, assessed at the scene by NWAS (North West Ambulance Service) and taken to hospital for medical treatment and a mental health assessment."
