FAMILY fishing sessions are making a return this Easter.
The sessions will take place on the Sankey Canal in Newton-le-Willows and are part of the Canal & River Trust’s Let’s Fish! programme.
The events are open to everyone aged six and over and are designed to introduce children and families to angling in a relaxed, supportive setting.
There are Let’s Fish events in Newton-le-Willows on April 2, 4, 9 and 25. times and locations can be found here: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/things-to-do/fishing/lets-fish/find-a-fishing-event?page=1
John Ellis, national fisheries and angling manager at the Canal & River Trust, said: "Fishing is a fantastic way for people to switch off, enjoy nature, and spend time together outdoors.
"The canals our charity cares for run right through the heart of towns and cities, making them perfect places for families and young people to try fishing close to home."
Fishing equipment will be provided, and trained coaches will offer one-to-one tuition for complete beginners.
Sessions are supported by local angling clubs and funded by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.
After taking part, young anglers can enrol in the Let’s Fish! Fishing & Environment Awards Programme, which helps participants build skills, knowledge and confidence in fishing.
Laura Chow, head of charities at People's Postcode Lottery, said: "It's amazing that funding raised by players supports the Canal & River Trust to deliver the Let’s Fish! programme.
"Its beginner-friendly sessions are the perfect way for everyone to enjoy the outdoors while developing a new skill with family and friends, no matter their age."
Later in the summer, participants will have the chance to join regional celebration events, with the programme culminating in two national gatherings: the National Celebration of Young People and Fishing on September 12-13, and the Daiwa Global Communities Celebration on October 17.
Let’s Fish! is part of a nationwide scheme that includes more than 400 events across England and Wales.
Sessions are either free or cost up to £5 per person, with rods, bait, licences and coaching included.
Places must be booked in advance.
