THE M56 is closed eastbound following a two-vehicle crash, causing three miles of congestion.
Two trapped casualties have been rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital.
The motorway is closed between junction 14 and 12, from Beechwood in Runcorn to Preston on the Hill in Runcorn, between
Delays of around 30 minutes are reported.
The crash happened at around 5.30am this morning, Monday.
Firefighters from Runcorn, Powey Lane and Ellesmere Port are dealing with the incident.
A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The road is closed so please avoid the area if possible.
"Firefighters will be leaving the scene shortly."
