MOTORISTS are warned of traffic delays after a gas leak this afternoon led to a series of road closures.

Merseyside Police has confirmed that emergency services are currently in St Helens following the leak near to the roundabout on Marshalls Cross Road, next to Sutton Park.

A police statement read: "It was reported at 3.35pm and Merseyside Police are in attendance to assist Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and electrical and gas representatives.

"A number of road closures are in place and motorists are advised to find an alternative route.

"We are also advising members of the public to avoid the area while the incident is being dealt with.

"There is no estimated time for the removal of the road closures. Officers would like to thank members of the public and motorists for their co-operation at this time."

Cadent, which manages Merseyside's gas network, has said it was called to reports of third-party damage to a gas main in Marshalls Cross Road, St Helens.£

Engineers are on site and dealing with the situation.
